£1 billion of food thrown away in Scotland

The most detailed study of its kind has highlighted the £1 billion of food needlessly thrown away by Scottish households each year.  This massive financial and environmental burden is described in a new report, The Food We Waste in Scotland, published today by WRAP Scotland. National Centre for Food Manufacturing shortlisted for RIBA design award

The National Centre for Food Manufacturing at the University of Lincoln’s Holbeach campus has made it to the final of a prestigious regional RIBA competition for architectural excellence. Ethnic food sales suffer from recession

Sales of Westmill Foods are down on last year, as the UK’s ethnic food sector continue to suffer from the effects of the recession, according to its parent Associated British Foods (ABF). (Foodmanufacture.co.uk) In a trading update, the manufacturer said that it expected to report a fall in profits on last year at Westmill Foods, which includes brands such as Patak’s and Amoy. Seal integrity and impact on food waste

In a project funded by WRAP, a team from the University of Lincoln investigated the contribution that inadequate heat sealing of food packaging might make to the generation of food and packaging waste, in the supply chain and the household. Using accepted testing methods heat seal integrity was measured in 11 factories containing 105 heat sealing units, packing a variety of ambient, fresh, chilled and frozen foods. Experts challenge pilot aspartame study
